What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is basically a waxy substance found in your body. The liver produces cholesterol which is needed for our body to function properly, cholesterol also comes from the food we eat, specifically from high cholesterol foods like cheese, meat, cookies, etc.

With the help of a unique particle made of fat and protein called lipoprotein, the cholesterol moves around in our bloodstream. There are two types of lipoprotein that help the cholesterol to travel in our body:

  1. HDL (High density lipoprotein)- The “Good” Cholesterol

  1. LDL (Low density lipoprotein)- The “Bad” Cholesterol

Let’s move forward you must’ve surely got an idea as to what cholesterol means. Well, having cholesterol in your body is not a health ailment but excess cholesterol is indeed the problem for our body which eventually affects the heart, and chances of strokes, heart attacks increase.  But have you thought about the reasons for cholesterol problems in your body? Unless you experience it by yourself you will never understand the importance of having a healthy lifestyle.

The chances of developing high cholesterol depends on genetics as well.

What is cholesterol?

Cholesterol is basically a waxy substance found in our bodies it’s also known as a type of fat. Cholesterol is produced by the liver for our body to function properly, the remaining cholesterol comes from the food we eat.

How is cholesterol a health implication for our body?

Cholesterol is required by our body organs and cells to function properly. Problems for our body crop up when excess cholesterol is produced, this has an effect on our heart and may lead to serious health problems like heart attack, stroke etc.

What are the types of cholesterol or lipoprotein?

1. HDL (High-density Lipoprotein)- The “good cholesterol”: It is known as the “good” cholesterol as it picks up the excess cholesterol in your bloodstream and takes it back to your liver where it is broken down and thrown out of your body.

2. LDL (Low-density lipoprotein)- The “bad cholesterol”: It is known as “bad” cholesterol as it is one of the major reasons for heart diseases like stroke and heart attacks. A high level of LDL cholesterol eventually builds within the walls of your blood vessels and tapers the hallways. The formation of a clot in our blood vessels can lead to heart attacks.

What are the causes of high cholesterol?

One of the major reasons for high cholesterol is the overconsumption of high cholesterol foods like cheese, fried foods, eggs, etc. This leads to excess cholesterol in our body and eventually causes problems.

What are the types of foods that should be avoided to keep your cholesterol levels under control?

Fried foods and fast foods are the type of foods which should be completely avoided if you’re suffering from high cholesterol problems.

Other foods like full-fat yogurt and eggs are healthy for our body but overconsumption of these can lead to high cholesterol problems. It is advised to limit the consumption of these types of foods and is not to be completely avoided as it also provides the necessary nutrients for the functioning of our body.
